Christmas

Christmas at NHESC

Christmas is a special time. At the NHESC we celebrate and share with our students and guests the traditional Christian values. It is a busy time year for staff, who, go above and beyond, to ensure our students enjoy the warmth of giving and receiving, have fun and the opportunity to perform on stage and run a Christmas Fayre stall.

The preparation starts during our Activities Week in October, when students begin to think about the preparation for the Christmas performance and Fayre: Catering students busy making chutney and Christmas cakes; Enterprise students planning Christmas Fayre stalls and running a Christmas market stall; Craft students and Construction students producing crafts for the Fayre. The annual Christmas tree competition at our local church is also planned and entered, with students spending time at the church decorating the tree and enjoying the peaceful spiritual surroundings.

The Christmas performance is always wonderful; our students having the confidence to stand on stage, in the spot light enjoying the applause of the packed audience. Heart-warming thanks from all guests are celebrated at the end, with the director and his crew being given a bouquet by the students.

The laughter and fun at this event is truly amazing, students winning raffle prizes, our guests winning on the tombola or card game. It is all part of our students enjoying British traditions and values.

The finale of the Christmas celebrations is the Christmas dinner – cooked by staff. All students and staff enjoy a sit down traditional Christmas meal – crackers, napkins enjoying passing the steaming trays of food along a busy table. This ends with Santa arriving with a Christmas stocking for every student, chocolate coins, socks, ‘smellies’ and a satsuma in a beautiful home-made traditional stocking.

Christmas at NESC is a wonderful time, it is part of being in our community and whilst for some, the experience can be difficult, it brings a warmth to our community and reinforces for the student that they are cared for.
